Heroin adalah derivatif 3.6-diasetil dari morfin (karena itulah namanya adalah diasetilmorfin) dan disintesiskan darinya melalui asetilasi. Bentuk kristal putihnya umumnya adalah garam hidroklorida, diamorfin hidroklorida. Heroin dapat menyebabkan kecanduan.
